VON PBX - The Brewster Example
In 2005 HipTel outfitted Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, NH with high speed Internet and a full scale VoIP phone system. Prior to our upgrades, Brewster had experienced many problems with the school's network. Including not enough outgoing phone lines, overpriced domestic and international long distance services, and lack of bandwidth on school computers during peak internet usage hours.
HipTel worked closely with Brewster Academy's CFO to provide an economic solution that meets the increasing demands of a growing school and prepares them for the future. HipTel designed an adequate plan for telephone and network upgrades necessary to bring Brewster's telecommunication system above and beyond their needs. Taking it one step further and preparing for future needs Brewster opted for a system above and beyond our recommendation. Equipment implemented at Brewster will ensure their telecommunications security for the next decades to come.
Brewster's Original Phone and Internet System
 NEC 2400 switch
 104 Central Office lines
 500 extensions
1 data T1 line providing the campus with internet access using 1.5 MB of bandwidth
5 T1 voice and video conferencing lines
 NEC 2400 switch
14 Verizon phones located external to the PBX

HipTel's Proposed Solution
 Prescient VON PBX system
 6 T1 Voice/Data lines
Monthly usage allowance based on 60,000 minutes vs. actual usage of 16,000 minutes
1 T1 PRI ISDN backup line
 Network infrastructure and wiring

The original system proposed by HipTel would increase the school's bandwidth, number of phone lines, and provide a backup solution incase the system temporally goes down. An ISDN line will be installed as a backup line. It will provide the main office with outgoing telephone lines and Internet access in case the main connection fails.
Implementing this system would save Brewster Academy about 25,000 dollars per year on their telecom bill. Additionally, it would provide more adequate services; allowing more students and faculty to simultaneously use external phone lines. Additionally it will increase Internet browsing and file download speed, and enhance video conferencing capabilities.
This technology will bring Brewster Academy up to date and prepared for the future expansion of their network.
What HipTel did for Brewster
The Brewster Academy administration opted for a more advanced telecommunication system. While the proposed system would provide above and beyond their current needs, Brewster wanted to prepare for future years to come.
Rather then implementing 6 T1 lines, Brewster Academy opted for a burstable DS-3 line, with 6 MB of bandwidth and 37.232 MB on demand. DS-3 lines are capable of providing up to 43.232 MB of bandwidth, however a system like this is unnecessary for a school of Brewster's size. Brewster has purchased 6 MB of bandwidth (of the available 43.232) on their DS-3 line. During peak traffic hours, should Brewster require more bandwidth they have 37.232 MB available 24 hours a day. Billing for a burstable line is the same as temporarily renting bandwidth from HipTel. Brewster is charged a standard monthly rate for their allotted 6 MB of bandwidth. Any required increases in bandwidth is billed on a per minute usage of increased bandwidth.
Requiring More Bandwidth
Should Brewster at any point decide they would like to permanently increase the bandwidth of their school's network, they have an available 37.232 MB to upgrade to. Right now, that bandwidth is allotted for bandwidth on demand, however, can easily be transposed to permanent bandwidth.
