Home Wiring Guide
For HipTel Broadband Phone

Isolate the Your House's Wiring From the Phone Company.

Re-wiring your home for HipTel Broadband Phone is easy and will only take a few minutes. If you feel that you are unable to do this yourself, we highly recommend consulting a telephone electrician. Failure to properly complete all steps listed below may result in damaged telephone equipment inside your home.
  1. Locate the box outside your house where the telephone lines connect to your home's phone system. This is called the Network Interface Unit (NIU). It is the location of where your local telephone provider's equipment ends and the signal is brought into your house. The box is generally shut with a screw, so you will need a screwdriver to open it.
  2. The NIU is divided into two sections. The section you will have access to is where the wires for your house's phone line start. You will also notice a ground wire coming from the phone companies side of the NIU. This wire protects against lightening strikes and other electrical disturbances. Please make sure you do not unhook, move or dislodge this wire.
  3. After opening the NIU you will notice one or more sets of screw terminals. Depending on the amount of phone lines in your home controls the amount of connected terminals. If you only have one phone line in your house, most likely only one terminal will be connected. You will notice each connector has a small wire coming out of it connecting it to a corresponding jack. To disconnect from your local phone company's system, just unplug the wires from the corresponding jack.
  4. It is important to make it clear that you have purposely disconnected yourself from your local phone company. Failure to do this may result in a phone technician reconnecting your wires and causing damage to your phone equipment. After disconnecting the wires tape the spliced ends with electrical tape. This will terminate all currents traveling through the wires and prevent someone from thinking the wires were accidentally disconnected.
  5. On the inside of your NIU clearly label a message that says "DO NOT RECONNECT WIRES, MAY CAUSE DAMAGE TO PHONE EQUIPMENT."
Confirm the Line is Disconnected
  1. Now that you have disconnected yourself from your local phone company, it is important to make sure you have done this correctly. From inside your home pick up a phone and listen. If you hear nothing, it means you have successfully disconnected from your local phone company. However, if you hear a dial tone, it means you are still connected to your local phone company. In this case, do not proceed any further. Contact a telephone technician for assistance.
Connecting Your HipTel Phone System to Your Home Phones
  1. Now that you have successfully disconnected yourself from your local phone company it is time to wire your house with HipTel. Relax, the hardest part is over. Take your broadband Internet connection and plug it into your HipTel phone adapter. Make sure to plug it into the slot marked "WAN." Plug in the power supply for your HipTel phone adapter (ATA). Then plug a regular telephone wire into the HipTel phone adapter in the slot marked "Phone." Take the other end of the phone wire and plug it into any phone jack outlet in your house. This will spread the signal throughout the phone jacks in your house.
Making Sure Your Connection Works
  1. Make sure the phones in your house are plugged into the wall and have power. Pick up the phone and listen for a dial tone. If you have followed all the steps correctly you should hear a dial tone and be ready to start using your HipTel phone. If you do not hear a dial tone, please consult a telephone technician.

Plugging to many phones into the phone jacks in your home will cause the signal to weaken. As a result, we recommend only plugging 5 to 6 phones into the phone jacks in your home. If you would like more phones we recommend purchasing an expandable cordless phone set.
Once you have completed all of the steps successfully, you are ready to start using HipTel. If you have any questions, comments or concerns please do not hesitate to contact us.
